[NHK MJ '16 Apr. 4]

These are the interview parts with English subtitles of this video which is already deleted. The video 1, 2, 3, 4 which I uploaded to DailyMotion were deleted in 2019 Aug., so I uploaded these to Google Drive on 2019 Aug. 19th.

This program was broadcast on 2016 Apr. 4th 0:04-0:43(JST) for the first time, and "complete edition" on 2016 May 7th 2:00-2:44(JST) with one more tune (4m20s) & the interview expanded. The rest of the program contains the studio live performance (6+1 tunes rec. on 2016 Feb. 18th) and the same old introduction of BABYMETAL with Sonisphere, Lady Gaga, etc. Expanded interview parts are contained in part 3 (20s for restored words & one more question of Mr. Marty and 20s for one more answer of Miss Suzuka).

I'm sorry if I've mistaken the voices of SU-METAL, YUIMETAL & MOAMETAL. The words enclosed with parentheses "(xxx)" are what I've inserted as supplement or what NHK inserted on their subtitles. The words enclosed with parentheses & asterisk "(* xxx)" are supplement that I'm not so sure of.

Click [CC] or "Settings" at the bottom-right if the subtitles are not displayed. I'm sorry that the subtitles are hard to read because of overlapped Japanese subtitles and that I can't merge the videos in one.

Part 1 (06:37.9 to 08:57, script 1 to 42)

Part 2 (17:32.1 to 21:10, script 43 to 100)

Part 3 (29:44.3 to 33:27, script 101 to 154)

Part 4 (42:38.8 to 43:58, script 155 to 162)

Notes

  1. I'm not sure whether "it (= the venue) has not changed" or "we have not changed" because there is no grammatical subjects and no clues.
  2. I'm sorry for failing to catch Miss Yui's words. Considering the context, most likely words are "taihen datta" (= it was tough).
  3. "Yoroshiku onegai shimasu" is literally "I beg you to do things properly (= in our favor)". It should be translated to "I beg your support / consideration / patience / etc." depending on the context. If without a context, I translate it to "I beg your kindness" which I found on the internet to be suggested by a native English speaker who had lived in Tokyo for many years.
  4. They met in 2011 Dec. for a magazine "SWITCH" vol.30, no.2 (pub. on 2012 Jan. 20th). Miss Suzuka was 13 or 14 yr. and Miss Yui & Miss Moa were 12 yr. then. Maybe it was not a talk session but a photo session.
  5. Miss Suzuka misunderstood Mr. Marty as a TV personality probably because Japanese TV variety shows for ordinary people often feature heavy metal musicians somewhat comically. Mr. Marty has appeared some music variety shows.
  6. "J-POP" means Japanese popular music. Originally this word was used to differentiate stylish music from old-style popular music such as "歌謡曲" (kayôkyoku) or "演歌" (enka). However, as many singers (including idols) came to sing the songs offered by such stylish musicians, such distinction became meaningless. Now all popular songs, except some old-style ones, are called "J-POP".
  7. To "American music" I translate "洋楽" (yôgaku). Since the late 19th century, kanji "洋" (yô) has been used for things of European mainstream: e.g. "洋服" (yôfuku; European style clothes). Now "yôgaku" means worldwide mainstream popular music, but most Japanese have in mind the songs sung in English, and here Mr. Marty probably used it for American music scene.
  8. Mr. Marty added "gichigichi" to "muzukashii" (= difficult). This onomatopoeia represents a creaky noise or the state of a thing such as a bookshelf filled with too many books. I'm not sure whether he simply meant Metal music is too difficult & complex or it therefore restrains players & dancers too tightly.
  9. To "break(s)" I translate "決め" (kime; lit. "fixed (phrase)"). It refers to an impressive section where all players play the same fixed phrase or to the phrase itself (including a pause where no players play). I don't know what English word is used for this meaning.
  10. To "annoying" I translate "yakamashii". It means "annoyingly loud/noisy". He may possibly have meant simply "too loud", but everything is loud in Metal music.
  11. "Irregular meter" is such a rhythmic structure as 5/4, 7/8, etc. while ordinary meter is 4/4 (8 beat rock, etc.) or 3/4 (waltz, etc). The tunes that continue such irregular rhythm are found only in ethnic music, modern jazz, progressive rock, etc. Probably Mr. Marty meant a bit of irregular meter inserted in ordinary 8 beat tunes to make them impressive.
  12. It may sound as if they're proud of publicizing Japan, but I wonder to what extent it is their real feeling.
In 2014 June, Japanese TBS set up and broadcast the interview of BABYMETAL and the ministress in charge of "Cool Japan". TBS's conclusion was that the government should not lead somewhat off-the-point "Cool Japan" promotion but support the people, such as BABYMETAL, who really convey Japan's good points to overseas people through their works. It may be that many people (including NHK) said something like this and our two girls were somewhat influenced by it to say these.
  13. Miss Suzuka probably mentioned not dancing to Metal music but dancing to live music in general.
Like most Japanese idol groups, Karen Girl's & Sakura Gakuin which she once belonged to (and also early BABYMETAL) sang & danced not to a live band but to playbacked tracks. Probably she couldn't recall other differences between BABYMETAL & others on the instant.

From Dusk Till Dawn

Released on 2016 Apr. 1st, included in "METAL RESISTANCE" (Out-of-Japan edition only).
Lyric: KITUSNE of METAL GOD, KxBxMETAL, TMETAL / Music: Yuyoyuppe / Arr.: YUPPEMETAL

This song is sung in English, but the lyrics have not been officially published.
This is my incomplete transcription with help of many fans of BABYMETAL.

From Dusk Till Dawn

One only waits
something's going to come
in one's way.
I want to take
every going-on toward
what to take.
Something's going to come.

In the air.
Pray upward
in the air,
in the air.

On the border,
don't stop for love.
Something's going to come.
On the border,
don't stop for love.
Something's going to come.

Cool.
Dream.
Forever.
A memory.
Heart.
Gone night.
Tomorrow.
You wanna mean.

Look at my face
more day after day,
then reach it's the same,
so each day's so same.
I wake from the dream
to keep on dreaming.
The night is so sweet,
but it's so late.
Break.

All it's over.
Never rule her.
All it's over.
Never rule her.

In the air,
in the air.

Syncopation

Released on 2016 Apr. 1st, included in "METAL RESISTANCE" (Japanese edition only).
Lyric: NORiMETAL, KxBxMETAL / Music: NORiMETAL / Arr.: MEGMETAL

Syncopation

A hot heartbeat and an urgent impulse
go so wild that I got upset, and they can't be stopped.
Like, dislike, like, dislike, like.
Like, dislike, like, dislike.

My mind is so full of fantasy that I feel scared.
It shows the near future and is about to overflow.
Like, dislike, like, dislike, like.
Like, dislike, like, dislike.

Ah, lit by the moonlight, with the Metal wings,

turn! Turn! From this world,  [Turn!]
fly up and away dancing!
Beyond the seasons coming and going around,  [Come and go!]
flap the wings and fly on singing!
Let the words of love resound beyond the night.

The beat gets painfully strong.
It shakes me to burning, and it can't be untangled.
Like, dislike, like, dislike, like.
Like, dislike, like, dislike.

I create a bit of future vision.
The hope to see it swells and is about to burst.
Like, dislike, like, dislike, like.
Like, dislike, like, dislike.

Ah, if the dark night is torn by beams of light,

swing! Swing! Drive melancholy away!  [Swing!]
When I dream of dreams and reach out my hand,
the dazzling dreams come and go around.  [Come and go!]
Their rhythm is the syncopation of love.
Draw the shape of love on the night sky!

From this world, fly up and away!
Swing! Swing! To the sky,   Fly!

Turn! Turn! From this world,  [Turn!]
fly up and away dancing!
The dazzling dreams come and go around.  [Come and go!]
Their rhythm is the syncopation of love.
Turn! Turn!  [Fly away!]
Swing! Swing!  [Fly away!]
Draw the shape of love on the night sky!

Amore

Released on 2016 Apr. 1st, included in "METAL RESISTANCE"
Lyric: NORiMETAL, MK-METAL, KxBxMETAL / Music: NORiMETAL / Arr.: Kyôtô

This song is SU-METAL's solo.

Amore  -Aoboshi-  ( Love -Blue Star-)

Let the words of love resound into the night sky.
Let them bring Amore to outer space.
Breaking through gloomy rain clouds,
one keeps running for twenty-four hours.
One is destined to keep running.

Ripping through the blue darkness,
the moonbeam sticks in a distant place.
Reflecting beautifully off the night flowers,
it dances in a momentary dream.

The eyes of one who made a vow
harbor the dazzling future.
Turning into a blue figure enveloped with light,
now one opens one's wings.

Let the words of love resound into the night sky.
Let them bring Amore to outer space.
Breaking through gloomy rain clouds,
one keeps running for twenty-four hours.
One is destined to keep running.

Even if I lose sight of you,
the voice of my heart keeps singing.
Even if you are far away,
I keep singing with the voice of my heart.

Let the words of love resound into the night sky.
Let them bring Amore to outer space.
The blue star that shines
brings the life into my hands.

Let the words of love resound into the night sky.
Let them bring Amore to outer space.
Breaking through gloomy rain clouds,
one keeps running for twenty-four hours.
One is destined to keep running.
Let love save the Earth.

Lit up by the crimson moon,
a momentary dream starts again.

GJ!

Released on 2016 Apr. 1st, included in "METAL RESISTANCE"
Lyric: Nakata Caos, Yuyoyuppe / Music: Yuyoyuppe / Arr.: YUPPEMETAL

This song is sung by BLACK BABYMETAL (MOAMETAL & YUIMETAL).

GJ! (Good Job!) -regular ver.-

The circle mosh of the green commuter train
turns into Wall of Death with the bell and the death growl.
To the right?  To the left?  We're stray sheep.
Die! Die! Die! Die! Die! Die!

It's hard for us to climb the stairway to adulthood.
One-step!  Two-step!  Lift up!
We swim across the stormy world by crowd surfing.
Dive! Dive! Dive! Dive!  Let's go!

More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  [[Let's try hard!]]
More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!
Lift us up more higher!

Good job!
We need not get irritated!  No!
Be light-hearted!  Take it easy!
Good Job!
Hazy feeling brings us nothing good!  Nothing!
We are the number one when being happy-go-lucky.

Soon after the shop opens, it's like a mosh'sh pit
with so-so roaring and Wall of Death.
Pushing!  Shoving!  It's like a crowd pushing game.
Burn! Burn! Burn! Burn! Burn! Burn!

In the breakdown, we do the hardcore mosh.
Forty percent, fifty percent, the prices are down!
We elegantly escape from pressing down and pulling off.
Get! Get! Get! Get!  Let's go!

More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  [[Let's try hard!]]
More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!
Give us more extras!

More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  [[Let's try hard!]]
More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  [[Let's try hard!]]
More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  [[Let's try hard!]]
More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!
Lift us up more higher!

It's transcendent! Perfect!
We give full marks even to weak-kneed persons!!  Yes!!
Don't be hasty!  Take it easy!
It's perfect!
Aiming too high brings us nothing good!  Nothing!
We are the number one when being happy-go-lucky.

GJ! -Gohôbi hen- ( Good Job! -Reward ver.- )

Every day we work hard,
so, can we have a bit of our own way today?
If someone objects to us,
bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

Every time we are in one body.
My lovely self, thank you for hard work!
Then, shall we go vigorously?
Buy! Buy! Buy! Buy!  Let's go!

More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  [[Let's pull!]]
More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!
Lift us up more higher!

Cute.
They are the rewards to ourselves!  Yes!
We turn into the buykings!  Because
they're cute.
We need not regret!  No!
Our wish list explodes and blows us up.

Every night we work hard,
so, can we treat ourselves a bit today?
If someone objects to us,
down! Down! Down! Down! Down! Down!

On everything, we do our best.
Lovely maiden, thank you for hard work!
Then, shall we go showy?
Go! Go! Go! Go!  Let's go!

More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  [[Let's pull!]]
More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!
Don't lift us up.

More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  [[Let's pull!]]
More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  [[Let's pull!]]
More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!  [[Let's pull!]]
More, more, hey!  More, more, hey!
Lift us up more higher!

They're transcendently delicious!
They are the rewards to ourselves!  Yes!
Our happy time can't be stopped.  Because
they're delicious.
We need not get worried!  No!
Our hearts beat fast and blow us up.

Tales of The Destinies

Released on 2016 Apr. 1st, included in "METAL RESISTANCE"
Lyric: KITUSNE of METAL GOD, KxBxMETAL / Music: Mish-Mosh / Arr.: tatsuo, Mish-Mosh

Tales of The Destinies

We have no luck!  We are unlucky!
Our answer is always...
We can't help it!  It can't be helped!
"not", "not", "not", "not"!
That is not it!  This is not it!
Where is the answer?
Nowhere!  Nowhere!  Nowhere!  Nowhere!
Nowhere, nowhere, nowhere, nowhere, nowhere, nowhere!

Don't worry, don't worry!  Now we're going to reborn.
Let's begin the countdown!
Set me free!

[Three, two, one, three, two, one, zero?]
[Three, two, one, three, two, one, zero?]

It never stops [it never stops].  It never ends [it never ends].
It's an unlimited melody [melody].
We [we] never look back,
Now and Forever.
It is our eternal memory.
THE ONE will be with you.
We are The Destinies.

Isn't it useless?  It's not useless!
No, no, no, no!
Isn't it impossible?  It's not impossible!
Isn't it a dream?  It's not a dream!
No, no, no, no!
Isn't it now?  It's not now!

Can't stop me, can't stop me now.  Now it starts.
Let's aim at the big chance!
Get ready!

[Three, two, one, three, two, one, zero?]
[Three, two, one, three, two, one, zero?]

It never stops [it never stops].  It never ends [it never ends].
It's an endless journey [journey].
We [we] are not alone,
Now and Forever.
It is our destiny.
THE ONE will be with you.
We are The Destinies.

Sis. Anger

Released on 2016 Apr. 1st, included in "METAL RESISTANCE"
Lyric: TSUBOMETAL, TMETAL / Music: TSUBOMETAL / Arr.: YUPPEMETAL

This song is sung by BLACK BABYMETAL (MOAMETAL & YUIMETAL).

Sis. Anger

I dislike
guys who think only about themselves.
You're uncool, super uncool.
Don't approach me!

I dislike
"impossible", "useless", "it's reached the limit".
They're uncool, super uncool.
I don't wanna hear them.

I will knock your ill-nature into shape.
Burn! Burn your anger hidden inside!

"Stop kidding! Hey, you!"
It doesn't matter to win or lose.
"Stop kidding! Hey, you!"
It is only to be serious or not that matters.

I dislike! dislike! dislike! dislike!
Fighting spirit! spirit! spirit! spirit!
You, stupid guy!

I dislike
guys who are not serious but only make excuses.
Stop kidding! I got super irritated.
Don't turn your dirty face to me!

I dislike
guys who can't do it but pretend to be tough.
Stop kidding! I got really irritated.
Get out of my sight!

I will knock your ill-nature into shape.
I will burn up everything with flare of anger.

"Stop kidding! Hey, you!"
It doesn't matter to be skillful or awkward.
"Stop kidding! Hey, you!"
You may think back but may not regret.

Fight! Fight against sneaking temptation!
Fight! Fight! Shout out your anger!

"Stop kidding! Hey, you!"
You say "sorry"? You say "forgive me"? What do I do with you?
"Stop kidding! Hey, you!"
It's a lie? Flattery? Ready for anything! Bring it on!

[atTowerRecords'13Mar.20]

This video is a copy of [ http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xyc4rd ] with English subtitles. The source is a streaming program "Idol 36-bou" broadcast on 2013 Mar. 20th by Tower Records. Miss Suzuka NAKAMOTO did this interview 11 days before she graduated from Sakura Gakuin.

The words enclosed with parentheses "(xxx)" are what I've inserted as supplement. The words enclosed with parentheses & asterisk "(* xxx)" are supplement that I'm not so sure of. Long complex sentences (> 2 lines) may be difficult to read because its phrases are displayed in the order of corresponding Japanese phrases.

Click [CC] or "Settings" at the bottom-right if the subtitles are not displayed.
I uploaded this video to Dailymotion, too.

[i] About This Interview

About this program "Idol 36-bou", Mr. MINEWAKI, Sakura Gakuin & its graduation system, see notes [i], [ii], [iii] of [ at TowerRecords '15 Mar. 5th ] (but the format of "Idol 36-bou" was slightly different between in 2013 & in 2015). Miss Suzuka was born in 1997 Dec. About her biography, see [ Biography ].

Because Miss Suzuka was the only one graduating member then (Miss SUGIMOTO's graduation was announced after this), she appears alone in this program. This interview was broadcast about 11:20-11:55 of 2013 Mar. 20th (Spring Equinox Holiday) on Internet live streaming. Before this interview appeared Mr. Kôtarô TSUJI, the chief editor of an idol magazine "Big One Girls" (BOG), for 50 minutes. He told several topics about her which he had collected, and two hosts refer to some of them in this interview.

Notes

  1. Mr. NAMBA seems to have said "yoyaku wa mô" (= the reservation, already), but I don't know how to interpret this.
  2. She entered junior high school in 2010 Apr. Sakura Gakuin was created in 2010 Apr. and its debut was 2010 Aug. 7th at Tokyo Idol Festival (TIF).
  3. "Nene-don" refers to Miss Nene SUGISAKI (in eighth grade then). This "-don" comes from a Japanese honorific title "dono". Which suffix (-tan, -rin, -don, etc.) is used for a nickname is based mainly on the ease of pronunciation and on matching of the tone to person's characteristics.
  4. The surprise party for Miss Suzuka is included in the DVD of "ku" edition of Sakura Gakuin's school year 2012 album "My Generation" released on 2013 Mar. 13th. The members sing a song "With Suu san who are in cheese color" whose melody is borrowed from Sakura Gakuin's "Mashumaro Iro no Kimi to" (= with you who are in marshmallow color) which is her favorite, and the sung lyrics contains topics of and messages to her. Then, every member reads her message to Miss Suzuka and they gift an album that contains their messages and photos with her.
  5. "Gôkyû, mên!" (= crying bitterly, men!) is the words of Utamaru from a Japanese hip-hop group Rhymester. He has a radio program which contains a part to introduce movies. It seems that he rarely shouts this phrase (only after introducing a very very impressive scene).
  6. Singer-songwriter YUI was born in 1987 Mar. and made a major debut in 2005 Feb. She sang with her guitar sitting cross-legged on the street & on stage. Her masterpieces are "feel my soul" (major debut), "Good-bye days", "CHE.R.RY", etc.
  7. I think "know" is probably a misstated "remember", but there is a possibility that she really has never heard the melody because she only finds the favorite lyrics in a songbook (without musical scores) and never listens to the song.
  8. To "promotional photos" I translated "aa sha" (= aachisuto shasin; artist photos), which the management office, etc. offers to the mass media to use for introducing the artists. The artist photos seem to be updated when their new single/album is released.
  9. "My Graduation Toss" is a rock tune (not Metal) written by the brilliant green (Tommy heavenly6). In the CD cover photo, etc., the members hold a guitar, a drum, etc. made of cardboard. In the MV, there are the scenes where Miss Suzuka sings with a standing mic. and the eighth grade members play the drums, the bass, the guitar, and the keyboards, but actually all members sing (there is also a very rare edition of "My Graduation Toss" which is Miss Suzuka's solo).
  10. Her papa seems to have been the bassist of a certain rock'n'roll band which released a mini album from an indie label in 1990. Some BABYMETAL's fans got this information with a clue of a famous singer's words saying Miss Suzuka is his friend's daughter. Rumor say her oldest sister is/was a member of a music club of a local college and she sings/sang with her guitar.
  11. "Negi" seems to be translated to "welsh onion", "green onion", "leek", etc. Actually it refers to Allium fistulosum. Mr. TSUJI told that she grew welsh onions in her room and her second sister Hime-tan (Miss Himeka) complained that their smell was unbearable.
  12. Actor's School Hiroshima (ASH) is an after-school school that teaches singing, dancing, etc. to the kids who want to be professional singers, etc. Its graduates are Perfume, Nakamoto sisters, Riho SAYASHI (ex Morning Musume.), Mariri SUGIMOTO (ex Sakura Gakuin), etc. It has no relation with Okinawa Actors School.
  13. A discount chain store Don Quijote offers one-yen coins to the shoppers who dislike their purses full of small changes (or it may be just for reduction of transaction time at cash registers). Donation boxes into which shoppers put received one-yen coins are more popular at convenience stores, etc. One-yen coins were not popular because most prices were rounded for some decades before 1989 when a consumption tax was introduced in Japan.
  14. In many (Japanese) idol groups, many lines of a song are sung only by one (or few) member(s). Some members sing many lines, others sing less lines, and this assignment (= 歌割り; uta-wari) is based on members' abilities & characteristics, the characteristics of the song, etc.
  15. The Japanese school year begins in April and ends in March, so in January, February, & March, the Japanese often make a mistake to say "this year" which actually should be "this school year".
  16. Though she says "After TIF was over...", what other members said resembles what she was told for the first time at the surprise party (in 2013 Feb). I don't know whether it is simply because she remembered/said incorrectly or the situation was complicated & difficult to explain.
  17. Karen Girl's was formed in 2008 to sing the opening theme of an anime "Zettai Karen Children". The members did voice acting (for one minute or so, as girl idols caught in a traffic jam) in that anime.
  18. She performed in a musical "Bôkensha-tachi" (a.k.a. The Adventure of Ganba) in 2009 Mar. & in 2010 Jun. It was performed several times in each period. She acted Shioji (a somewhat important character if I remember correctly).
  19. "Perfect combustion" is the translation of "完全燃焼" (kanzen nenshô) by Miss Yui MIZUNO. It is a scientific word "complete combustion", but in this context, it means to do something thoroughly so as not to regret like "I wish I had done so-and-so then".
The thoroughness is extreme. For example, many ace pitchers of Japanese high school baseball teams pitched three whole games (quarter, semi, & final) in "Kôshien" tournament on three successive days. This overwork has broken many pitchers' elbows, shoulders, & careers, so the situation has been recently somewhat improved. Even now, however, not a few pitchers say "Let me pitch! I will burn out myself in Kôshien." and not a few people praise it.
  20. In Japan, "live house" refers to cafes, bars, or restaurants which offer live music (or concert venues with drink counters).
Since the graduation show tends to be sentimental, Sakura Gakuin holds a concert few days before the graduation show every year to enjoy cheerfully Sakura Gakuin's performance. At the end of this concert, however, the graduates tell their courses after their graduation, and the audience may possibly be shocked at them.

The transcription (.srt file) is below.

2016/02/07

* Aogeba Tôtoshi

This is not BABYMETAL's song but a famous graduation song which Sakura Gakuin covered. The translation is of Sakura Gakuin's own interpretation of it (the lyric is old-fashioned, so Sakura Gakuin were told the meanings of the words and they interpreted the lyric in their own situation). In [At TowerRecords '15 Mar. 5th], Miss Yui said she hoped to let Sakura Gakuin's fans know what members felt on their graduation, so I have translated it. Their interpretation was displayed on the MV that was presented by Gyao only from 2015 Mar. 3rd to 8th.

[atTowerRecords '15 Mar.5]

This is a copy of a live streaming program "Idol 36-bou" broadcast by [Tower Revolve Project] on 2015 Mar. 5th with English subtitles. I thank the fan who recorded & uploaded this on the internet. It is a talk session of Moa KIKUCHI, Yui MIZUNO, Hana TAGUCHI & Yunano NOTSU from Sakura Gakuin with the hosts. It is amusing but may not be so informative.

I am sorry if I've mistaken the voices of the members. The words enclosed with parentheses "(xxx)" are what I've inserted as supplement. The words enclosed with parentheses & asterisk "(* xxx)" are supplement that I'm not so sure of. These happen because the Japanese often omit what (is difficult to say and) the listener would imagine, and that often causes troubles.
